Exhibition
Following her appointment as laureate of the BelgianArtPrize 2025, Suchan Kinoshita was invited to create and present new work at Bozar. Her exhibition, titled Renovation, is presented in the Antichambres of the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels.
Renovation
For her exhibition, Suchan Kinoshita takes over the symbolic halls of the Antichambres at the Centre for Fine Arts. A century ago, these rooms hosted the first exhibitions. Initially used for decorative arts, new creations, and sales, they were long associated with the less formal arts before being linked to research and demanding contemporary creation. Historically, they were designed as passage between the ‘higher’ and ‘lower’ parts of the city. Built around a rotunda with a gilded, vaulted ceiling, the rooms are illuminated in a special way when natural light floods the space.
Renovation reflects Suchan Kinoshita’s architectural, formal, and musical research. The artist, interested in elements that exist on the margins of the scene, enjoys blurring the temporal and aesthetic lines of institutional and museum spaces to unfold unexpected and unsettling areas, thereby playfully and humorously subverting the conventional expectations of visitors and institutions. In this ongoing play of mirrors between public and institutional expectations, Kinoshita will awaken the hidden memories of the Antichambres by also making visible the concealed or underlying elements of how an exhibition space operates, nestled within a house of multiple artistic identities.
